The different series of the Pokémon TCG
A series or cycle in Pokémon represents the era of a specific generation. When a new cycle begins, a large number of new Pokémon are introduced, and new games are released.
The cycles of the Pokémon Trading Card Game:
The Base Series marks the beginning of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. It includes the legendary Base Set as well as the first expansions such as Jungle and Fossil, focusing on the original 151 Pokémon from the Kanto region.
The Neo Series introduced the second-generation Pokémon from Johto. New concepts such as Dark and Light Pokémon were also added, bringing more strategic variety to the game.
With the e-Card Series, some now extremely rare cards were released. These were compatible with the Nintendo e-Reader via a special code – but only in Japan and the United States.
The EX Series ushered in a new era: Pokémon-ex (written in lowercase) made their debut, accompanied by the return of many legendary Pokémon. This series was known for powerful individual cards and intense battles.
In the Diamond & Pearl Series, Pokémon LV.X were introduced, offering new strategic options. The game’s balance was also adjusted to support more complex mechanics.
The Platinum Series focused heavily on Pokémon from the Sinnoh region and introduced Arceus, one of the most mysterious Pokémon, into the TCG for the first time.
The HeartGold & SoulSilver Series leaned into nostalgia and introduced Pokémon Prime as well as LEGEND cards – the latter consisting of two halves that formed a powerful Pokémon when combined.
With the Black & White Series, Pokémon-EX (this time written in uppercase) entered the game. Full Art cards were also introduced for the first time, featuring artwork that covered the entire card.
The XY Series brought Mega Evolutions from the video games into the trading card game. Thanks to Spirit Links, these could be played without ending the turn.
In the Sun & Moon Series, Pokémon-GX and Tag Team GX cards were introduced, featuring two (or even three) Pokémon on a single card. Prism Star cards also made their debut.
The Sword & Shield Series revolutionized the game once again: with Pokémon-V, VMAX, and later VSTAR, the Dynamax mechanic from the video games was brought into the TCG. Additionally, Battle Styles – Single Strike and Rapid Strike – were added, and many Pokémon appeared in their Gigantamax form.
With the current Scarlet & Violet Series, Pokémon-ex return in a new format. Cards now feature a silver border – standardized internationally for the first time. Also introduced were Terastallized Pokémon with special protection, as well as the Future and Ancient mechanics inspired by the video games’ time-themed storylines.
