Pokémon Cards by Expansion

The Pokémon TCG Expansions

The Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) has steadily evolved since its launch in 1999. Technically, it all started with the Base Set, the very first official card set. All subsequent releases are considered expansions – additional sets that expand the game with new cards, gameplay mechanics, Pokémon types, and strategies.

A set is a single release with a symbol and usually a specific theme or focus. Multiple sets together form a cycle (also called a "series"). A cycle usually revolves around a specific Pokémon generation and often introduces new gameplay mechanics. Thus, each cycle contains several expansions that together shape the game in that era.

For example, the Sword & Shield cycle includes numerous sets like Battle Styles, Astral Radiance, and Crown Zenith. These sets introduced Pokémon V, VMAX, and VSTAR, among other things, as well as new playstyles like Single Strike and Rapid Strike.

Some interesting and popular sets from the history of the Pokémon TCG are:

  • The last set of the Johto generation, known for the introduction of Light and Dark Pokémon.
  • One of the rarest sets with beautiful artwork and e-Reader compatibility.
  • Highly sought after due to the introduction of the legendary Deoxys in multiple forms.
  • A tribute to the original Base Set with modern gameplay mechanics.
  • One of the largest sets of all time with over 270 cards.
  • A special set with many alternate illustrations and coveted Full Art cards.
  • A modern highlight set with many shiny Pokémon.
